GBCI will retire the standalone PEER (Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal) certification program. The final day to register new projects is Dec. 31, 2025. Applications for certification and recertification will be accepted through Dec. 31, 2026.

For a decade, PEER has recognized leaders improving power system efficiency, day-to-day reliability and resilience to severe events. Collectively, PEER-certified projects have

  • Impacted 8 million people.
  • Saved 785 GWh per year.
  • Mitigated nearly 21 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.
  • Saved $66 million in maintenance costs per year.

What’s changing

  • New registrations close Dec. 31, 2025.
  • Active registered projects can apply for certification until Dec. 31, 2026, and will be supported through completion.
  • PEER certifications remain valid. Listings will be preserved in a public registry.
  • Recertification will be accepted through Dec. 31, 2026. PEER guidance will remain available as a best-practice resource.

What’s next

USGBC and GBCI remain committed to the outcomes that PEER advances. Rather than continuing as a standalone certification, PEER’s valuable key principles will be integrated and scaled across other products.

  • Select PEER concepts are reflected in LEED v5 and in community-scale programs, such as LEED for Cities and LEED for Communities (e.g., Power Access, Reliability, and Resiliency), and may be expanded where appropriate.
  • USGBC and GBCI will share mapping to help teams pursue PEER-aligned outcomes within these programs and invite stakeholders to shape targeted, PEER-informed tools and guidance.

Why this evolution is happening

As the market seeks holistic, accessible solutions, integrating PEER’s strengths into our core programs allows these practices to reach more projects and communities while maintaining rigor. USGBC remains committed to leading resilient, high-performance power systems.

We thank the visionaries and practitioners who made PEER possible, especially S&C Electric and the Robert W. Galvin Foundation. Together, we’ll continue advancing resilient, sustainable power systems at scale.
