In recent years, India has taken on a greater leadership role in providing clean and reliable power to all. The government has set a goal of installing 175 GW of renewable power capacity by 2022 and increasing non-fossil-based power capacity to 40 percent by 2030.
In 2009, installed solar capacity was 6 MW and today its grown to 17 GW.
There are 14 smart grid pilots at different stages of commissioning and operation under the National Smart Grid Mission and the government is racing to provide power to more than a quarter of a billion people who lack access.
Yet there is much work to be done. The power and electricity sector are at a tipping point similar to what the buildings industry experienced prior to LEED. The industry needs a tool that defines a common framework, drives accountability and transparency in grid modernization and smart grid development, and provides a catalyst for scaling up sustainable power systems.
PEER, or Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal, is the first rating system that measures and improves power system performance and electricity infrastructure. Supporting global grid modernization efforts, PEER is a metrics-based certification program administered by GBCI that evaluates and verifies a power system’s performance across seven categories.
PEER can be used for power systems of all sizes, including campuses (ranging from a single building to an IT campus or SEZ), microgrids, critical infrastructure, an entire city’s grid or a utility territory.
Around the world, PEER will inspire and influence professionals to comprehensively address electricity demand, distribution, resiliency and reliability to provide access to sustainable sources of power for everyone within our generation and to build an infrastructure for the 21st century.
In India, GBCI has been working with 14 eminent industry experts and think tanks over the past two years to provide guidance and vision on PEER. The group helps strengthen the program and supports us in taking it to market.
Communities all over the world are working to modernize and improve electricity infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing global population, to adapt to an ever-changing energy market and the growth of renewables, to improve electricity resiliency and to mitigate the impacts of climate change by reducing carbon emissions. PEER translates these ambitious goals, associated with grid modernization, into tangible, metrics-based objectives.
