PEER

PEER is a third party certification program that measures and improves power system performance. PEER evaluates power generation, transmission, and distribution systems across desired outcomes of optimal efficiency, quality, reliability, and resiliency, and with minimized impact to the environment.

Why PEER?

Electricity is lost through conversion and waste, which has a negative impact on the environment as well as the economy. Reliance on non-renewable energy sources threatens our environment. Poor power quality can damage electrical devices. Power outages, usually as a result of severe weather, costs the economy billions of dollars a year and poses risks to critical infrastructure.

PEER addresses power generation, transmission and distribution—from the time it leaves the generator until it reaches the customer. PEER leads to greater efficiencies in energy use and reductions in carbon emissions, as well as greater power quality and reliability to businesses, municipalities, and the general public.


How PEER works

The PEER rating system has four outcome-based credit categories and 68 credits. Projects are assessed against the rating system to obtain PEER certification. The four credit categories are shown below.

Reliability & resilience
Intent: ensure the reliable delivery of electricity and reduce injuries, interruptions and power quality issues. Credits address: power quality, supply availability, interruptions, risk mitigation, restoration, redundancy and microgrid capabilities.
Energy efficiency & environment
Intent: assess the environmental impact of electricity generation and transmission and encourage the adoption of clean and efficient energy. Credits address: energy efficiency of power delivery, air emissions, resource use, renewable energy credits and power delivery impacts.
Operational effectiveness
Intent: to leverage value gap analysis to identify and eliminate waste. Credits address: electricity costs, asset utilization, load shaping, general operation expenses, capital spending or investment, corrective maintenance and indirect costs.
Customer contribution
Intent: to assess customer contribution to grid service, investment and innovation. Credits address: customer grid service capabilities, meter data access, tools, choice, incentives and dynamic pricing.
